Making progress with people from local communities

We have been working in Canton and amongst people who are turning to drugs and alcohol.

Before we get into that we just want to make a point about why it is so important to highlight the need why we should build trust with people before expecting anything from a person looking to improve themselves.

We love the film Good Will Hunting. The video linked below is an extract from the film and an example of a counselor not going to great efforts in developing a relationship with his client, to the point he gives up. Have a look at the video (We apologise for any offence caused in the video this film was made in 1997 but is a fantastic example to give).

The point is this. You can't just tell someone you have never met before no more shenanigans, no more tomfoolery and no more ballyhoo. If you think someone will just turn away from a life they have been used to for a long time. NO NO NO. You must BUILD RELATIONSHIP with people and create trust, then they might just listen to you.

What happens when you build trust with a person?

In Canton we have forged many relationships with men who are heavily involved in substance mis-use and those who are consuming large amounts of alcohol. Did we say to them straight up, right then no more shenanigans, no more tomfoolery and no more ballyhoo. NO NO NO. In our first meeting's we got to know one another so that we could be comfortable with one another.

After the first intial meetings we were able to get to the route causes of peoples low self-esteem. We then started to encourage these people overtime and showed them how to manage their anxiety in different ways away from alcohol and drug substances. We cannot name the individuals because of confidentiality purposes. But lets look at three people we have worked with.

The first person we worked with was un-employed and was a heavy drinker and occasional substance user. Overtime he cut down on drinking and completely cut down on substance mis-use. Within 4 months of working with him he found himself a job as a supervisor in retail store.

The second person we worked with was a heavy drinker. Over the past 3 months he has cut down on his drinking and has found a flat to live in as well as finding himself a girlfriend who is supporting him through difficult times, he is on the up.

This person was a heavy drugs user. He has now completely stopped taking drugs and has now setup his own painting and decorating business which he has been trying to do for years.

Because firstly they have to have someone who believe's in them, someone to take time in building a relationship with someone they can trust, and when that trust is established you can encourage them to make positive changes that lead to the stepping stones of a healthier life. More confidence in these lads lives is helping them see their self-worth bringing more promise and positive prospects.

The lads we have worked with so far have got their confidence levels up because they have been encouraged with positive affirmation, from:

* You are capable of getting through a day and doing many constructive things.

* You have so much to offer the community.

The point is this when you speak a little bit of life into someone it is so affective, it is the easiest thing to do to help someone with their confidence levels. It leads people away from alcohol and substance mis-use and to a more balanced life.
